Our Background

The Terminix story began in the 1920s with the then largest producer of hardwood floors in the U.S. — the E.L. Bruce Company. The company had been receiving customer complaints about rot in their hardwood floors. However, it was not actually rot that was affecting the wood; it was termites. Marketed under the name Bruce-Terminix, the company shifted gears and started “nixing” termites and the termite damage that was occurring in the customers’ flooring.

As the demand for termite treatment and protection grew, Terminix became the first to achieve many successes. Senior chemist Frank H. Lyons’ unique insecticide enabled Terminix to hold the first patent for a termiticide, and Terminix became the first termite control company to franchise. By 1955, it was the first to offer a termite protection guarantee or contract. As a result of this commitment to treatment and protection, Terminix expanded its offerings to general residential and commercial pest control services in 1958.

In 1961, the North Carolina franchise was divided, with John R. Detgen taking over as a second-generation franchisee and starting what is referred to today as Terminix Triad. The new branch was opened in Greensboro, and the company’s footprint ultimately expanded throughout the Piedmont area into Winston-Salem, Burlington and High Point.

From humble beginnings as a division of a hardwood flooring company, to becoming a part of the most trusted pest control company in the industry, Terminix Triad has been ranked as the 29th largest pest control company in the U.S. out of 18,000, according to Pest Control Technology magazine.

We now operate 15 different branches in 17 North Carolina counties. Our Corporate office, built in 1991, resides at 2200 16th Street in Greensboro, but we cover areas from Boone to Burlington. We also employ more than 200 pest management professionals — all dedicated to serving your pest control and related service needs.
